Built in 2006, this unique, contemporary home at 231 Elmira St in Port Townsend, Washington exhibits a special relationship between indoors and outdoors, between man-made and natural.

A host of windows and skylights invite in natural light and views of the forest. Twelve full-glass doors open onto a courtyard, paved patio and deck creating an outward extension of the living space. In mild weather, doors and windows flung open, the house takes on the feel of an open pavilion.

Artifacts from nature like granite boulders, cedar tree sections from the property and natural-edge window sills become structural elements that help blur the distinction between inside and out. And rather than be hidden, vernacular materials such as plywood, corrugated metal and concrete are celebrated for their utilitarian beauty. At 231 Elmira the natural and the man-made, indoors and outdoors coexist in aesthetic harmony.
